October 6th Meetup - Using Google Apps for Collaboration
Submitted by corey on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 22:07."I'm more of a collaborator. You can't have a lot of split votes and have the agency serve its mission." -- Andrew Chesley
Google Apps is a collection of tools from Google, available at low- or no cost to nonprofits. The suite features several web applications with similar functionality to traditional office packages and standalone collaboration tools; even telephony.
Join us Tuesday October 6th at Denver Open Media, for a discussion of how nonprofits are using these tools today. Ted Fickes from The Wilderness Society, and Pogo from the Colorado Environmental Coalition will share some of their experiences with these tools, and discuss common obstacles and concerns.
When: Tuesday, October 6th, 6-8pm
Where: Denver Open Media (700 Kalamath St, Denver, 80204)

August 4th Meetup - Open Government Data
Submitted by corey on Fri, 07/31/2009 - 19:48.Join us this Tuesday for the Colorado Nonprofit Technology and Communications (CNTC) meetup. This month's discussion topic is "Open Government Data".
Much recent work been done in our nation's capital, around open data and transparency. The city of Washington DC made lots of municipal data available in real time, and the Apps for Democracy program saw some real successes building on that. Similar efforts are underway in other cities across the nation, and at the federal level as well. What are some of the promises and pitfalls of this movement? Join us for a discussion of open government data:
- What is it?
- What are people doing with it? (and, so what?)
- What are the pitfalls and problem areas?
- What does it mean for Colorado?
When: Tuesday, August 4th, 6-8pm
Where: The Alliance Center (1536 Wynkoop Street, Denver, 80202)
We'll provide light snacks (soda, chips, and the like). Limited free parking is available in the Alliance Center lot. Otherwise, there should be some metered parking within a block or two.
If you're planning to attend, please let us know:
See you Tuesday!
Followup - Social Media Planning and Monitoring
Submitted by corey on Thu, 07/09/2009 - 05:23.Thanks to everyone who attended our July 7th meetup, "Social Media Planning and Monitoring". We had a full house. Overfull, really. Most everyone was using social media with their organizations and clients, and a few veterans have been using it for a year or more. Some were already doing a bit of monitoring and shared their tools and thoughts, and we had a helpful presentation on social media planning by the Denver DataMan, Steve Kessler.
Thanks for the helpful comments and feedback we've received recently, and BIG thanks to all of you who've been talking and tweeting about our group and events the last couple of days.
CNTC + CNA/CANPO Partnering Meeting
Submitted by corey on Tue, 05/12/2009 - 19:31.CNTC organizers met April 21st, with Sara Raab from the Colorado Nonprofit Association, to discuss shared goals and ways we can support one another. Our goals are very much in line, and CNTC was received favorably, especially as a resource for presentation and training at the CNA fall nonprofit summit (October 29, 30 in Denver).
CNTC / T4T Partering Meeting
Submitted by corey on Tue, 02/10/2009 - 15:20.CNTC organizers met with Teaming for Technology on February 4th, to explore overlapping goals and ways we might support one another. This is a summary of the points from the meeting.
There's a great deal of overlap in the aims of T4T and CNTC. Both seek to promote wise use of technology by nonprofits in Colorado. Both groups can easily support each others' efforts via regular communication, sharing of training space and resources, and expanding training topics and staff...
Give and Receive at NTEN's Online Office Hours
Submitted by corey on Fri, 01/30/2009 - 17:17."Remember when you were in college and you just could not understand covalent bonding in that Chem 1A class? All you had to do was stop by your TA's office hours for a little extra help and you were on your way to a sterling GPA... Now that you're a grown up, you're often on your own. If you need help configuring the security settings on your new server, or deciding which email vendor to use, you don't always know where to turn for advice..." (from the NTEN website)
NTEN provides an online chat room, for informal Q&A related to nonprofit technology. People with expertise in a particular area sign up to answer questions, and it's easy to pop in and get some help. The calendar gives a good idea of who will be online and when. If you have some questions about websites, offsite backups, or just about anything you can find someone willing to give you a bit of free advice. Check it out on the NTEN website.
What's New for 2009?
Submitted by corey on Tue, 01/13/2009 - 18:29.CNTC group is working with Colorado nonprofits and nonprofit
support organizations. This year, we will be hosting monthly
educational and social events, as well as meeting with other related
groups, to see how we can best facilitate, support, and encourage
connections.
If you're working with nonprofits and technology in Colorado, you're probably aware of these resources. As we begin 2009 with a new political direction and a new set of economic challenges, they're worth a quick review to see how they can help you make the best use of your resources and knowlege.
- TechSoup - Deep discounts from all major software vendors, loads of reviews and good information. If you're not buying your software through here you're probably spending too much.
- Idealware - Idealware has great product comparisons, checklists, and guides for technology planning and decisionmaking.
- NTEN Research - NTEN surveys and compiles extensive information on nonprofit technology across all sectors and org sizes. Find out how other organizations feel about their CMS, CRM, donor database, or technology vendors. Compare your IT staffing and budget levels against those of your peer organizations.
And, don't forget these great local organizations:
- Teaming 4 Technology - T4T provides information and referrals for free and reduced-cost computer hardware, software, training courses, and technology consulting services. They offer low-cost computer training courses in Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs, and they also grant computer hardware and tech planning assistance through the TechLaunch program.
- Colorado Nonprofit Association (CNA) - Formerly CANPO, the CNA is a statewide nonprofit membership coalition connecting nonprofits of all sizes, missions and geographic locations. They provide tools for communication, networking and administration, and host a regional nonprofit conference/expo each fall.
- Community Resource Center / NPower - The CRC provides tools and strategies for Colorado nonprofits, including technical services and training.
September 30 - Social Networking and Nonprofits
Submitted by corey on Fri, 09/19/2008 - 15:50.Join us Tuesday September 30th, at 6:00 p.m. for a panel discussion on Social Networking and Nonprofits, followed by informal chat time with fellow Front Range nonprofit tech and communications folks! We have two excellent presenters: Steve Kessler and Justin Perkins.
Social networking websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace are a popular topic among nonprofits these days. There is appeal in the potential to quickly and easily reach a large, global community of supporters, but how well does it work? How can an organization decide what to pursue, and evaluate effectiveness? How can we get started?
Audience: NPO staff who have little or no experience promoting their cause through social network sites, but want to know more. Also, anyone with experiences and lessons they'd like to share, from promoting their cause in this way.

He is an active speaker and trainer in the Colorado nonprofit tech community, working regularly with several groups, including Teaming 4 Technology and KidsTek.
Justin Perkins is a Director of Nonprofit Services & Business Development at Care2.com. He is a new media marketing expert who develops partnerships with nonprofits and customizes strategic campaigns for them to reach Care2's online network of 9.5 million civically active adults.
